BRONX, New York (WABC) -- A search is underway for a prisoner who escaped from a hospital in the Bronx on Friday.

Police say a 42-year-old male prisoner escaped from inside BronxCare Hospital located at 1650 Grand Concourse around 2:10 p.m.

They say he was arrested on Friday for a petit larceny in April, when he stole sneakers from a store.

He was taken to the hospital and then later fled.

Police say he has more than 20 prior arrests, for burglary, petit larceny and drugs.

Police are canvassing the area for the suspect.

No further details have been provided.
