Assistant Chief James Bryant briefs the media on a double fatality that occurred on US 59 near Elgin Street. Preliminary informartion: At approximately 9:15 PM, HPD officers received a shoplifting call in the 5000 block of Westheimer. With the vehicle description, officers made a search of the local area. They located a dark colored Chevy Tahoe matching the description and attempted a traffic stop at the corner of South Rice and Westpark. The driver refused to stop and a pursuit ensued. The suspect vehicle entered the northbound lanes of US 59 (I-69). As they approached the I-45 interchange, the suspect vehicle was involved in a minor accident. Four females exited the suspect vehicle and ran across the freeway. As they attempted to cross the southbound lanes, two of the suspects were struck by oncoming traffic. They were pronounced deceased at the scene. The other two suspects were detained and are in police custody.
