Earlier today, Chief Day welcomed 16 new Portland Police officers, marking another milestone in the Bureau's effort to rebuild staffing levels and strengthen public safety services citywide. While the Bureau is on track to see a net gain in sworn officers for the first time in many years, Chief Day emphasized that Portland still remains below the staffing levels needed to fully meet community expectations. During the press conference, Chief Day highlighted recent public safety successes, including continued reductions in shootings, strong homicide clearance rates, the disruption of illegal street takeovers, and ongoing partnerships with community organizations working to reduce violence. Chief Day also addressed the adopted city budget and what it means for the future of policing in Portland. Despite anticipated reductions to services, training, overtime, and alternative response programs, he reaffirmed the Bureau's commitment to serving the community.
